What is the temporary works process?

Your company temporary works policy and process should be based on BS 5975-1:2024 and follow these simple steps:

  1. Identify what temporary works are required on a temporary works register.
  2. Plan who and what is going to be involved and how others will interact.
  3. Provide a design brief and all associated information as the starting point to identify any loads and other factors for the temporary works designer to provide a suitably designed solution.
  4. Ensure a design check is undertaken in accordance with BS 5975-1:2024 table 2.
  5. Prepare risk assessments incorporating risks associated with construction, use and removal.
  6. Procure a solution from a reputable supplier ensuring the equipment meets the specifications required by the design.
  7. Ensure implementation risk is identified in accordance with BS 5975-1:2024 table 1.
  8. Build and carry out a final check to ensure the structure has been built in accordance with the certified design.
  9. Issue a permit to bring into use and monitor during use by carrying out regular inspections.
  10. Confirm permanent works or self-supporting, or temporary works are no longer required, and issue a permit to take out of use.
  11. Dismantle in accordance with permanent works designers requirements.

Your involvement will be determined by your job role and the temporary works responsibilities you've been given. Anyone involved in managing the design or build of temporary works should be formally appointed to ensure they have the necessary competency and understand their responsibilities ensuring the safe execution of temporary works.
